Sustainability as an Input for the Design of Olympic Villages

Since the 1960s, hosting the Olympic Games has been seen as an opportunity to create urban development. The post-Games use of sport venues, the fulfillment of a city�s housing needs by using Olympic Village buildings and the renewal of transport and other infrastructure that accompanies hosting of the Games may be considered indicators for the success of the International Olympic Games. But the city and its citizen do not benefit from these investments in the design of new structures if that design is not carried out in the light of well-planned urban development projecting. Local and international studies on sustainability, particularly since the 1980s, have shown that sustainable urbanization is only achievable with sustainable development planning. Therefore economic, social and environmental development needs to be provided. If the last Olympic cities are examined in relation to this aspect, it will be seen that an understanding of such factors is reflected in their development. Throughout the history of the modern Games host cities have considered them as an opportunity for development, but cities are now heading towards the implementation of more sensitive actions for the future generation, social and environmental values with the improvement in the approach of sustainable development.

Olimpiyat oyunlar�na ev sahipli�i yapmak 1960�lardan bu yana bir �kentsel geli�im� f�rsat� olarak g�r�lmektedir. Kent i�ine in�a edilen spor tesislerinin oyunlar sonras� kullan�m�, olimpiyat k�ylerinin sosyal konut alanlar� olarak kentli ihtiyac�na cevap verebilmesi ve kentlinin ya�am alanlar� ile i� alanlar�, spor ve k�lt�r tesislerine rahatl�kla ula��m�n� sa�layacak alt yap� yenilemeleri ekonomik a��dan oyunlar�n organizasyonunun ba�ar�yla sonu�lanmas�n�n g�stergelerinden say�labilirler. Ancak t�m bu yat�r�mlar�n kente ve kentliye olumlu y�nde geri d�n�� yapabilmesi i�in iyi bir kent planlamas� yapmadan sadece yeni yap�la�ma alanlar� tasarlamak yetmemektedir. �zellikle 1980 y�llardan bu yana s�rd�r�lebilirlik kavram� �zerine yap�lan ulusal ve uluslar aras� �l�ekteki �al��malar g�stermi�tir ki, s�rd�r�lebilir bir kentle�me, s�rd�r�lebilir bir kalk�nma planlamas� ile m�mk�nd�r. Bunun i�in de ekonomik, sosyal ve �evresel kalk�nman�n sa�lanmas� gerekmektedir. Bu bak�mdan son y�llardaki olimpiyat �ehirlerini incelendi�inde, bu anlay��n onlar�n geli�im planlar�na nas�l yans�d��n� g�r�lebilmektedir. Y�llar i�inde s�rd�r�lebilir kalk�nma yakla��m�nda elde edilen ilerlemelerle, oyunlar� bir tan�t�m ve geli�im f�rsat� olarak g�ren ev sahibi kentlerin, gelecek nesilleri d��nen �evreci ve sosyal de�erlere kar�� daha duyarl� eylemlere y�neldikleri sonucuna ula��lm��t�r.
