‘Anarchitecture' as an oppositional position in architectureÖze Uluengin1, Tülin Görgülü21Department Of Architecture, Faculty Of Architecture, Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey2Department Of Architecture, Faculty Of Architecture, Maltepe University, Istanbul, Turkey Beginning from the earliest traditional tales, the notion of space has been conceptualized in a variety of ways. Subjugating a transformation with every fragment in the systematicness of thinking throughout history, the conception of space has therefore found a place in various architectural approaches. In this study, the notion of ‘anarchitecture’ which has emerged in the last quarter of the 1900s, fervidly critisizing the de facto understanding of architecture, has been approached through the works of three distinguished researchers in this field. In the first section, the comprehension of space put forth via the installations performed by Gordon Matta-Clark, the renowned artist who has substantial works on anarchitecture, and the fundamental principles he sought to destroy have both been evaluated. Consequently, the ‘free space’ concept of Lebbeus Woods, who is well-known for approaching anarchitecture in a more theoretical manner, and eventually the understanding of Brian Heagney who has explored the term through the concept of space of the primitive communities, have been examined. In the second part of the study, an attempt has been made at analyzing the understanding of space of all these different approaches. The objective of this work is to emphasize and evaluate the contributions of the anarchitecture approach to our present day understanding of space. Tarihsel süreçte, düşünce sistemlerindeki her bir kırılma noktasına paralel olarak dönüşüm geçiren mekân anlayışı, böylelikle farklı mimarlık yaklaşımları içinde kendine yer bulmuştur. Bu çalışmada, 1900’lü yılların son çeyreğinde ortaya çıkan ve genelgeçer mimarlık kavrayışına eleştirel bir tutum sergileyen 'anarchitecture’ yaklaşımı, bu alanda çalışmaları bulunan üç isim üzerinden ele alınmıştır. Bu bağlamda çalışma iki kısımda ilerler. İlk bölümde, ‘anarchitecture’ kapsamında pek çok çalışması bulunan Gordon Matta-Clark’ın gerçekleştirdiği enstalasyonlar ile ortaya koyduğu mekân kavrayışı ve bu alanda yıkmaya çalıştığı temel kabullere değinilmiş; ardından, kavramı daha kuramsal bir perspektifte ele alan Lebbeus Woods’un kavramı açıklarken ortaya koyduğu ‘özgür mekan’ anlatısı incelenmiş ve son olarak kavramı ilkel toplumların mekânı üzerinden inceleyen Brian Heagney’nin ‘anarchitecture’ anlayışına yer verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde ise, aynı başlık altında toplanan bu yaklaşımların mekân anlayışları çözümlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı, ‘anarchitecture’ yaklaşımının günümüz mekân kavrayışına sağladığı katkıların ortaya konması ve tartışılmasıdır.
