Bodily and Spatial Dimensions of Architectural Design Process in the Digital Age within Embodiment of Experience

In today's digital epoch, existing design interfaces are insufficient for the generation of abstract and conceptual ideas by designers in the early phases of the design process. This is despite the rapid spread and wide adoption of digital design tools and methods over the past two decades. It is obvious that traditional design tools such as sketching and physical modeling maintain their importance in modern digital design studios. This indicates a gap between the potential of digital media and its realization. This gap cannot be properly understood by merely considering it as a problem of tools and interfaces. In order to gain an holistic insight, we need to factor in the body which perceives and interacts in-the-world, through sensory-motor experiences and cognitive processes. In this study, we explore the role of embodied bodily experience on the constitution of abstract and conceptual ideas. We use both Lakoff and Johnson�s concept of �image schema� and McNeill�s classification of gestures to examine a thirty-minute case study involving two postgraduate architecture students. The aim of this study is to explore whether there are repetitive patterns in the iconic and deictic gestures during the modeling process as the participants generate spatial ideas. We aim to enrich the discussion on the role of bodily experience during architectural design and modeling by using the outcomes of this case study.

Dijital �a� olarak adland�r�lan g�n�m�zde, say�sal tasar�m ara�lar�n�n ve y�ntemlerinin �zellikle son yirmi y�lda artan bir ivmeyle yayg�nla�mas�na ra�men, mevcut say�sal tasar�m aray�zleri mimari tasar�m�n erken a�amas�nda tasar�mc�lar�n kavramsal ve soyut d��nce geli�tirmesinde yetersiz kalmaktad�r. Mimari tasar�m st�dyolar�nda, eskiz ve maket gibi geleneksel tasar�m ara�lar�n�n �nemini korudu�u g�r�lmektedir. Say�sal ortam�n potansiyellerinin yeterince kullan�lamamas�, bir ara� ya da aray�z problemi olman�n �tesindedir. Konuya daha geni� bir perspektiften, say�sal ortam kullan�c�lar�n�n �d�nya i�erisinde�, �bedenleri arac�l��yla�deneyimledikleri, duyu-motorsal ve bili�sel s�re�lerle birlikte bakmaya ihtiya� vard�r. Bu �al��ma kapsam�nda, somutla�an bedensel deneyimin soyut ve kavramsal d��nce geli�tirmesi �zerindeki etkisini tart��maya a�an kavram ve kuramlar irdelenmi�tir. Lakoff ve Johnson��n imaj �emas� kavram� ile McNeill�in jest s�n�fland�rmas�ndan yararlan�larak, iki mimarl�k y�ksek lisans ��rencisinin kat�ld�� 30 dakikal�k modelleme s�reci incelenmi�tir. Modelleme s�recinde kat�l�mc�lar�n g�r�nt�sel ve g�sterimsel jestler ile uzamsal d��nce �retme s�reci aras�ndaki etkile�imde, tekrar eden �r�nt�ler olup olmad��n�n ara�t�r�lmas� ve deneydeki ��kar�mlar �zerinden mimari tasar�mda bedenin rol� konusundaki tart��malara katk� sa�lanmas� ama�lanm��t�r.
